Devon Toews scored 1:12 into overtime to complete the Colorado Avalanche's comeback against the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 5-4 victory Saturday night in Denver. The Avs erased a 4-1 2nd period deficit starting with Cale Makar's 15th of the season at 16:46.
Alexander Kerfoot's 6th of the season got the Leafs going at 7:54 of the first period. It would be the first of 3 unanswered goals by the Leafs, Kerfoot's effort followed by Auston Matthews (21) at 14:17 and 14:50 (22). Colorado would cut the Leafs lead in two with Nathan MacKinnon's 5th of the season at 17:11.
The 2nd period featured far less goal scoring, as only 1 goal was put in the cage by either team. Toronto's Nick Rtichie (2) on the power play made it 4-1 Leafs, while Colorado again cut into the Leafs lead with Makar's effort as mentioned earlier. This would spur the comeback by Colorado starting in the 3rd period.
By then, it was only a 2-goal deficit for Colorado, and they made short work of it, courtesy of Gabriel Landeskog (14) at 10:06 and J.T. Compher (7) at 11:42. Things would stay tied for the remainder of regulation before Toews send the Leafs packing with his 6th of the season.
