Avalanche Win First Stanley Cup in 21 Years Behind 2-1 Victory Over Lightning in Game 6

The Colorado Avalanche became the 2022 Stanley Cup Champions with a 2-1 victory over the previous 2-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 Sunday night in Tampa at Amalie Arena. It marks the Avs' first Stanley Cup win since their victory in 7 games over the New Jersey Devils.

Although Steven Stamkos (11) opened the scoring for Tampa Bay at 3:48, it would be the only goal the Lightning would put past Avs netminder Darcy Kuemper. In the 2nd period, Colorado got both of its goals, the first from Nathan MacKinnon (13) at 1:54 and Artturi Lehkonen (8) scoring the Cup-winning goal at 12:28. No goals were scored in the 3rd period, with the Avs successfully holding onto the 2-1 lead for the remaining 28 minutes. Colorado defenseman Cale Makar won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, thanks in part to his team-leading 29 points this postseason. Makar had already achieved his first All-Star Game appearance this season and was fresh off winning the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman.

Colorado starts next season as the odds-on favorite to repeat with 6-1 odds. Tampa Bay follows a close second at 8-1. The Hurricanes, Rangers, and Panthers round out the top 5, Carolina and New York at 10-1 and Florida at 12-1.
