Anthony Beauvillier's goal at 10:56 of the 3rd period capped a 4 unanswered goal explosion as the New York Islanders stunned the Colorado Avalanche 5-4 Saturday night at UBS Arena.
It took a while before any team got on the scoreboard initially, as there were no pucks in the net during the first 20 minutes of play. 46 seconds into the 2nd period, Evan Rodrigues (3) opened the scoring log with a power play tally for a 1-0 Colorado lead. The Avs would add 2 more goals in the 2nd frame, by Mikko Rantanen (4) at 7:38 and Evan Rodrigues' 2nd of the night (4) at 8:33. The Islanders managed to get one back by period's end, however, as Noah Dobson (3) put New York on the board, making it 3-1 Avs.
Dobson's tally would start the 4 consecutive goals by the Islanders to take an improbable 5-3 lead by the final minute of the 3rd period. Zach Parise (3) put the Isles within 1 at 3:35 and then Scott Mayfield (3) tied the game at 10:39. Then just 17 seconds later, Beauvillier (3) put the Islanders in front for the first time that night at 10:56. The Islanders would add their final goal at 18:39 by Brock Nelson's (3) empty-netter. Colorado would at least get the last laugh, courtesy of Alex Newhook (1) with 30 seconds left in the game.
The Islanders both outshot and outhit the defending Stanley Cup champions, 44-36 and 26-21. Colorado managed 32 faceoff wins to the Isles' 24 and totaled 6 penalty minutes to New York's 4. The Isles improve to 5-4-0 and 3rd in the NHL's Metro Division while Colorado falls to 4-4-1 and 3rd in the Central Division. New York's next contest is a trip to Chicago (4-3-1) on November 1 at 8 pm, while Colorado gets a brief break before traveling to Columbus (3-6-0) to face the Blue Jackets in the early afternoon with puck drop scheduled for 2 pm.
