Bergeron's 4 Goals, Marchand's 4 Assists Help Bruins Dominate Red Wings
The NHL has a new dynamic duo.
Patrice Bergeron scored 4 goals and Brad Marchand added as many assists as the Boston Bruins throughly defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 Thursday night. Defenseman Mike Reilly also added a goal and an assist for Boston.
In fact, Bergeron managed to accomplish a natural hat trick- 3 consecutive goals by one player, a rare feat in today's game, before adding a fourth. His first came just over 11 minutes into the first period. Bergeron would add his 2nd and 3rd goals in the 2nd period 11 minutes and 19 minutes in. About 8 minutes into the 3rd period, Detroit finally put one past Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman, who undoubtedly seemed to have the night off because of Boston's incredible efforts. Lucas Raymond's 5th goal of the year on the power play provided the only joy Detroit would have that night.
Mike Reilly would get his lone goal roughly 8 minutes into period 3, shooting it past Red Wings goalie Thomas Greiss to make it 4-1 Boston. Bergeron's 4th and final goal of the night with under 5 minutes to go in the 3rd period, extending the Boston lead to 4.
Detroit did manage to log more penalty minutes than Boston (12-10) and had slightly more hits than the B's (25-24). Boston dominated the Wings on shots, outshooting Detroit 37-15 and also on faceoff wins, with a 32-22 advantage.
The Red Wings' next outing is a trip to Buffalo for a Saturday evening tilt against the Sabres at 7 PM. For Boston, they head north of the border to Toronto to battle the Leafs at 7 PM Saturday as well.
