Matt Boldy achieved his first career NHL hat trick and 1 assist while Kirill Kaprizov added 2 goals and 1 assist as the Minnesota Wild fought off a late charge by the Detroit Red Wings with a 7-4 victory Monday night in St. Paul. Mats Zuccarello also had 3 assists for Minnesota.
Detroit opened things early with 2 quick goals by Dylan Larkin (25) at 1:27 and Gustav Lindstrom (1) at 4:01. Minnesota would tie things by the end of the period, however, as Boldy tallied his 1st 2 goals of the night consecutively at 5:29 for his 5th of the season and again at 8:04 on the power play for his 6th of 2021-22.
In the 2nd period, Minnesota added another pair of goals while simultaneously keeping the Wings off the scoresheet, taking a 4-2 advantage into the 3rd period with goals by Kaprizov (21) at 4:54 and Boldy completing his hat trick with his 2nd PPG of the night at 18:13 for his 7th of the season.
The 3rd period ended up being a scoregami, and Minnesota once again struck first, making it 5-2 courtesy of Joel Eriksson Ek (14) on the power play exactly at the 8-minute mark. Detroit would make it a 1-goal game and a 5-4 deficit after scoring a pair of goals from Lucas Raymond (13) on the power play at 9:43 and Sam Gagner (5) at 18:14. The Wings tallied the latter goal by sending a 6th attacker onto the ice with 5:30 to go, a very ballsy move that somewhat paid off. Minnesota would shut things down, though, as they would tally 2 consecutive empty netters by Kaprizov (22) at 19:11 and Ryan Hartman (19) with 15 seconds remaining to give the Wild a 7-4 win.
