Bruins Drop 9 on Rival Canadiens Behind Heinen's Maiden Hat Trick

Danton Heinen achieved his first career NHL hat trick as the Boston Bruins steamrolled their archnemesis Montreal 9-4 Saturday night at TD Garden.

Cole "Goal" Caufield was the first man on the scoresheet, making it 1-0 Montreal at 9:18 of the 1st period. Boston tied things at 1 from Brandon Carlo (3) at 12:47, but Montreal got back in front thanks to Joel Armia (8) right at the 15 minute mark. However, Boston wasn't fazed and added a pair of goals from Jake DeBrusk (11) at 18:10 and Heinen's first of the night, his 6th of the season, at 19:05. Boston held this 3-2 lead heading to the 2nd period.

The 2nd period started scoring-wise again with Montreal, this time with Mike Matheson (7) at 6:16 on a Canadiens power play to knot things at 3. Heinen put Boston back in front, 4-3, at 10:46, and they'd add 1 more to make it 5-3 from Charlie Coyle at 11:35. Montreal did at least get within 1 before the end of the period, thanks to Brendan Gallagher (8) at 13:16. Unfortunately for him, it'd be the final puck in the net for the Habs as the teams headed to the 3rd.

Boston ripped off 4 unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes, by David Pastrnak (30) at 1:26, Brad Marchand (20) at 4:32, Pavel Zacha (10) at 9:13, and Heinen's hat goal at 10:40 (8) on a Boston power play.

With the statement win, Boston improves to 28-8-9, firmly atop the Atlantic Division and picking up their 4th win in a row in this contest. They have a record of 6-1-3 in their last 10 games with a home clash against Winnipeg next up tomorrow evening at 7 pm. Montreal drops to 19-20-7, 6th in the Atlantic, with a 4-4-2 last 10 record, and their next game is a home tilt with Ottawa on January 23 at 7 pm.
