Charlie McAvoy scored the go-ahead goal in round 9 of the shootout as the Boston Bruins fended off the Dallas Stars 4-3 Monday afternoon at TD Garden.
Jesper Boqvist (2) lit the lamp for the Bruins to give the B's the early 1-0 lead at the 4:01 mark of the 1st period, before Dallas tied it thanks to Wyatt Johnston (18) at 11:14. The two top 5 in the standings squads remained tied there heading to period 2, where it was Dallas who took the early lead 2-1 off a tally from Ryan Suter (2) at just 1:04. However, Boston tied it just under 30 seconds later via Justin Brazeau (1) at 1:32. Once again, that would be the last goal scored by either side in the period, and they'd stay that way throughout the whole 3rd period and subsequent 5-minute 3-on-3 overtime.
Dallas took the lead in the bottom part of Round 1 in the shootout, Jason Robertson the goalscorer. Boston tied it in the top of Round 3 with captain Brad Marchand's speedy effort, and they stayed tied at 1 like in regulation until McAvoy put it home in the top of Round 9. Dallas' Craig Smith, a former Bruin, tried to tie it again at 2-2 but was denied by the inches-wide goal line. Of course, Boston netminder Jeremy Swayman got a skate on it, but still - it was literally a game of inches in the end.
Boston improves to 33-12-11, just at the top of the Atlantic Division, with a 4-4-2 record in their last 10 games. They play next at Edmonton on February 21 at 10 pm. Dallas drops to 34-14-8 and is still atop the Central Division with a 7-1-2 last 10 record. Their next game is a trip to Madison Square Garden to face the Rangers tomorrow at 7 pm.
