Michael Bunting achieved his 2nd career NHL hat trick as the Toronto Maple Leafs blew past the Detroit Red Wings 7-4 Saturday night in the Motor City.
Detroit lit the lamp first with Dylan Larkin only needing 1:15 for his 21st of the season to make it 1-0 Wings. Much later on, Toronto would tie things at 1 apiece with Pierre Engvall's 6th of the season at 16:28, which would be the score heading to the 1st intermission.
The 2nd period featured 3 goals by Detroit, with Vlad Namestikov (12) at 1:16, Tyler Bertuzzi (21) at 2:11, and Larkin's 2nd of the night (22) on the power play at 15:54. Toronto added 1 goal, Bunting's first of the night and 10th of the season at 12:07. At the end of 2, Detroit had 4 in the cage, and Toronto had 2 in the cage.
The 3rd period was all Toronto, as they racked up 5 unanswered goals, 2 consecutive by Bunting to complete his hat trick with goals #11 at 9:28 and #12 at 11:58 to make it a 4-4 tie. The Leafs weren't done, though- Rasmus Sandin (1) at 17:09, Mitch Marner (11) on the power play at 18:46, and John Tavares (17) with 11 seconds left in regulation made it a 7-4 Leafs lead and Toronto win.
