Jordan Martinook scored in the top round of round 9 in a shootout as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Los Angeles Kings 6-5 Saturday night at Crypto.com Arena.

Big beard defenseman Brent Burns was first on the scoresheet, making it 1-0 Carolina at 4:15 of the first period, starting a 3 goal tally by the Canes, the next by Sebastian Aho shorthanded at 6:41 and Jesperi Kotkaniemi at 13:28. The Kings did pull one back before the end of period 1, however, with Drew Doughty at 18:27 for a 3-1 deficit heading to period 2.

Brendan Lemieux needed 3:03 to extend the Carolina lead to 4-1 before the Kings halved it courtesy of Anze Kopitar at 5:20 on a Los Angeles power play. A few minutes later, Carolina would make it 5-2 with their 2nd shorty of the game, this one at 10:23 from Teuvo Teravainen. But once again, LA pulled one back, making it 5-3 heading to the 3rd with a goal from Trevor Moore, which also came on the man advantage like Kopitar's.

Los Angeles would complete a regulation comeback with goals from Vladislav Gavrikov at 11:24 and Kopitar's 2nd of the night at 18:38 to set up overtime. After 5 more minutes without a winner, even with things tied at 5 apiece, things headed to a shootout. In Round 1, the Kings' Adrian Kempe missed a shot left of Carolina goalie Frederik Andersen, while Burns had his shot stopped by LA netminder Phoenix Copley. Round 2 saw LA's Pierre-Luc Dubois give the Kings a 1-0 lead before Teravainen was stopped by Copley. Round 3 started with a Kopitar miss and an Aho goal as Carolina knotted the shootout at 1.

In Round 4, it was saved on both ends, LA's Kevin Fiala and Carolina's Seth Jarvis. Round 5 saw Trevor Moore make it 2-1 Kings, but Carolina's Marty Necas made it 2-2 right after. Round 6 was another double save effort, with shots by Quinton Byfield and Tony DeAngelo being turned aside. Round 7 was the 3rd double save, this time with Carl Grandstrom and Michael Bunting being denied for LA and Carolina, respectively. In Round 8, another double save occurred on the Kings' Philip Danualt and the Canes' Brady Skjei. Finally, in Round 9, LA's Alex Laferriere missed, and Carolina's Jordan Martinook sent everyone home with the winning goal.

After that slugfest, Carolina heads a very short drive southeast to Anaheim to face the Ducks tonight at 8:30 p.m., the 2nd of 3 California games. Los Angeles, meanwhile, heads way east and up north to face Winnipeg on October 17, with puck drop scheduled for 8 p.m.
