Capitals Stave off Senators in Both Sides-Hat Trick Game
I can't think of anyone who's seen a game that had 1 hat trick on both sides and one that almost had 2 for one team. But that's exactly what went down in the Washington Capitals' wild 7-5 win over the Ottawa Senators Monday night in the Canadian capital.
The game started off with a blast as the Sens' Drake Batherson logged his first of 3 goals on the night at just 2:26 into the game, which Washington probably didn't want happening. T.J. Oshie would log his first of 3 goals that night exactly 4 minutes later at the 6:26 mark. Oshie added his second at the 11:10 mark, and then for the remainder of the first, it was all Capitals, as Nick Jensen and John Carlson picked up their 2nd and 1st goals of the season, respectively. The first period ended at Capitals 4, Senators 1.
Heading to the 2nd period, the Sens continued their comeback, with center Josh Norris getting his 3rd of the year past Washington goalie Ilya Samsonov. Fellow Sens center Chris Tierney would add his 4th of the season on the power play and suddenly, Washington's 4-1 lead was now 4-3. Drake Batherson then tied thae game at 4 at the 11:16 mark. Alex Ovechkin would add another Caps goal with just under 4 minutes to go in the period to restore Washington's 2-goal lead. Meanwhile, T.J. Oshie completed his hat trick with his 4th of the season with just 8 seconds left in the 2nd period.
In the 3rd, Batherson said to Washington, "Hat trick, huh? That's cool, watch this," before adding his 4th goal of the 2021-22 season at the 6:32 mark. Ovechkin then fired another rocket past Sens goalie Filip Gustavsson to make it 7-5 Capitals with under 10 minutes to go. Ovechkin nearly had a third, but the Great 8 ran out of time, missing 2 empty-net shots before the final buzzer sounded.
The Caps play next on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at home against the Detroit Red Wings at 7 PM. For Ottawa, it's off to Dallas for a Friday, Oct. 29 tilt against the Stars at 8:30 PM. Both games will be streaming through ESPN+.
