Andrew Copp achieved a 1st-period natural hat trick for his 2nd career 3-goal game while Artemi Panarin added 4 assists to teammate Adam Fox's 3 as the New York Rangers easily handled their crosstown rival New York Islanders 6-3 Friday evening at UBS Arena.
Copp scored all of the 1st-period goals by either side, tallying goals 19-21 of the season to give the Blueshirts a 3-0 lead heading to the 2nd period. Copp's efforts came at 3:343, 7:48, and 18:13, with Panarin assisting on all 3 pucks in the cage.
The Isles did kick things up a notch as Brock Nelson scored just 37 seconds into the 2nd frame to cut the Rangers' lead to 3-1. Much later on, NYR would add two goals by Chris Kreider (51) at 17:15 on the power play and Ryan Strome (20) at 19:07 to take a 5-1 lead heading to the 3rd period.
Nelson once again drew first blood for either side in the 3rd just like he did in the 2nd, needing just over 2 minutes for his 36th goal of the season on the power play to make it a 5-2 game. The Rangers wouldn't add 1 back until Ryan Reaves (4) at 12:53 for their final goal of the game, and it proved to be the game-sealer, even with Josh Bailey's (12) tally at 13:22 to make it 6-3 Rangers.
