Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby achieved his 15th career NHL hat trick as the Pens defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 Friday night at Nationwide Arena.
The Penguins only needed 32 seconds to light the lamp, with Brian Dumolin's 3rd of season opening the scoresheet. Columbus would later tie things up at 10:40 courtesy of Gustav Nyquist (10) shorthanded and would also take the lead towards the end of the opening period with Boone Jenner's 16th of the season at 18:46. That would be the last goal on the night for the Jackets, and on top of that, Pittsburgh would tie things at 2 heading into the first intermission when Crosby got his 1st of the night and 8th of the season with 29 seconds left in the period.
There were no goals scored by either team in the 2nd period.
After a completely uneventful 2nd period, the 3rd period was all Pittsburgh, as they tallied 3 unanswered goals with Mike Matheson (6) at 5:35, Crosby's 2nd of the game at 13:32 for goal #9 of 2021-22, and Crosby again to complete his hatty with goal #10 on the season at 18:02 for a 5-2 Pens win.
