Tyler Ennis achieved his 2nd career NHL hat trick as the Ottawa Senators shutout the Buffalo Sabres 5-0 Tuesday night in the Canadian capital.
It took a while before any team was able to first light the lamp, and as fate would have it, Ennis got on the scoresheet first with his 2nd of the season at 15:53 of the first period. However, Ottawa would tack on two additional goals for a 3 unaswered goal first period with efforts by Drake Batherson (13) on the power play at 17:11 and Ennis' 2nd of the game and 3rd of the season at 18:48 to give Ottawa a 3-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.
Only 1 goal was scored by either team in the 2nd period, and it was by Ottawa's Alex Formenton, his 8th of the season at 11:15 to make it 4-0 Ottawa. Similarly, in the 3rd period, 1 goal was scored, and this time, it was Ennis completing his hat trick with just 30 seconds left in regulation, his 4th of the season, to make it a 5-0 Senators lead, which would be the final score.
The Senators outshot, outhit, and won more faceoffs than the Sabres, holding 47-32, 38-23, and 37-27 advantages. Ottawa also racked up 14 penalty minutes compared to Buffalo's 12.
Next up for the Sens is a trip to Raleigh to face the Hurricanes on Jan. 27 at 7 PM. For the Sabres, they head far west to face the Arizona Coyotes Jan. 29 at 9 PM.
