Matthew Tkachuk tallied his first career NHL postseason hat trick while Blake Coleman added a pair of goals and Rasmus Andersson's goal and 2 assists as the Calgary Flames decimated the Edmonton Oilers with 9 goals in a 9-6 victory in Game 1 Wednesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Calgary burned Edmonton very early on, scoring 2 goals in the opening minute of period 1, tallies from Elias Lindholm (4) at just 26 seconds in and Andrew Mangiapane (2) at 51 seconds in. Calgary would make it a 3-0 lead at 6:05 courtesy of Brett Ritchie (1). Edmonton would at least get the last laugh of the period, though, as Connor McDavid (5) (who else?) would get the Oilers on the board at the 7:41 mark to make it 3-1 Flames by the end of the opening frame.
The Flames had another blazing fast start to the 2nd period, needing only 45 seconds for Coleman's first of the night and of the playoffs for a 4-1 lead. Coleman would add his 2nd goal of the game at 6:10 for a 5-1 Calgary advantage. Exactly 1 minute later, Edmonton got their 2nd of the game, courtesy of Evan Bouchard (1) making it 5-2 Flames. Tkachuk (2) would score the first of his 3 goals at 7:24 on the power play to make it 6-2 Calgary, and this would unintentionally start a 3-goal barrage by Edmonton to pull the Oilers within 1 by the end of the 2nd period. Back-to-back goals by Zach Hyman at 9:38 (3) and 14:06 (4), plus a tally by Leon Draisaitl (6) at 19:21 helped Edmonton mount a near-comeback.
The Oilers would have the fast start to period 3, as they needed only 1:28 for Kailer Yamamoto's (2) game-tying goal for a 6-6 game. It would be all Calgary from there, though, as the Flames would get their own 3-goal barrage, the first by Andersson (2) at 2:57 and Tkachuk going back-to-back to complete his hat trick at 8:55 (3) and 17:49 (4) for the final 9-goal team tally for Calgary.
