Matthew Tkachuk and Mikael Backlund scored 2 goals apiece while Johnny Gaudreau added 5 assists as the Calgary Flames thrashed the Edmonton Oilers 9-5 Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Edmonton only needed 32 seconds for the first goal of the game, as Derrick Brassard made it 1-0 Oilers with his 8th of the season. The Flames, though, would log 3 answered goals to jump out to a 3-1 lead towards the end of the 1st period, their efforts by Elias Lindholm (33) at 5:28, Chris Tanev (5) at 14:23, and Mikael Backlund (11) a mere 16 seconds later for his first of the night. The Oilers would at least pull within 1 courtesy of Leon Draisaitl (45) with just under a minute remaining in the period.
Draisaitl would actually tie things up at 3 for Edmonton with his 2nd of the night at the 44-second mark, his 46th goal of the season on the power play. At 3:07 of period 2 though, Calgary would be back in front, courtesy of Oliver Kylington (8). But Edmonton quickly responded with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (8) at 3:52 on the power play tying the game at 4. Two goals by Calgary's Matthew Tkachuk, though, at 5:06 and 7:39 for his 31st and 32nd goals of 2021-22, snuffed out Edmonton's efforts, giving the Flames a fresh 6-4 lead. Drasaitl cut the lead back down to 1 once again with a hat trick goal on the power play for his 47th of the year at the 9:18 mark of the 2nd period. Calgary still led 6-5 heading to the 3rd.
The 3rd period would be all Calgary, as they logged a 2nd set of 3 unanswered goals to take a 9-5 lead, which ended up being the final score. Elias Lindholm (34) at 2:55, his 2nd of the game, Mikael Backlund (12) at 6:01, his 2nd puck in the cage, and Dillon Dube (9) at 14:23 sealed the Oilers' fate in the final Battle of Alberta of the season. Both Alberta squads have split the season series at 2 games apiece.
