Flyers Edge Oilers to Spoil Edmonton's Perfect Start
Two third period goals from Cam Atkinson and Sean Couturier helped the Phildelphia Flyers upset the undefeated Edmonton Oilers on the road in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Thursday night. The Flyers got on the board first and knocked in the first two goals of the game courtesy of Claude Giroux and Nate Thompson. A mere 35 seconds after Thompson's first of the season, Edmonton's Tyson Barrie got his first of the year to cut the Philly lead in half, making it 2-1 Flyers. Later on, Connor McDavid would tie the game with his 7th goal of the season on the power play to make it 2-2 with just 18 seconds left in the period. However, he was outdone by Philadelphia's Cam Atkinson, who got the puck past Oilers goalie Mikko Koskinen with 1 second on the clock. Atkinson would add a 2nd goal roughly 4 minutes into the 3rd period of play.
The only goal of the 2nd period came just 54 seconds after the opening puck drop when Edmonton's Zack Hyman got his 6th of the season past Philadelphia goalie Carter Hart.
Philadelphia edged out Edmonton in almost every major team stat, the only disadvantage being outshot by the Oilers 37-34. Both teams kept their play clean, combining for a minimal 12 total PIM. The Flyers racked up more faceoff wins, picking up 30 circle draw victories to Edmonton's 22. Philadelphia also logged more hits than the Oilers, with 27 body shots, while Edmonton racked up a close 21.
Next up for the Oilers is a road trip to Vancouver to face the Canucks at Rogers Center at 10 PM Saturday night. For the Flyers, they stay in the Great White North for now, hoping to continue a 2-game road win streak after beating the Canucks last night by a score of 2-1. They'll visit Calgary for a Saturday night tilt at 10 PM. Both games will stream on ESPN+.
