Tomas Hertl scored the 4th hat trick of his NHL career to help the San Jose Sharks erase a 3-1 2nd period deficit against the Calgary Flames Tuesday night at the SAP Center.
The Flames got on the scoresheet early, courtesy of Dillon Dube (3) at just 1:37. Hertl later tied things up at 8:58 on the power play for his 10th of the season before Calgary spoiled things with Johnny Gaudreau's 12th of the season roughly 3 minutes later. The Flames would keep the 2-1 advantage going into the first intermission.
The 2nd period was an absolute goalfest, and once again, Calgary got things going first, making it 3-1 when Adam Ruzicka logged his first goal on the year at 4:31. 6 or so minutes after that, at 10:08, Erik Karlsson's 7th of the season cut the Calgary lead to 1 once more. And from there, it was all Sharks, as San Jose would add goals by Logan Couture (8) on the power play at 14:27 and Tomas Hertl's 2nd of the night (11 overall) roughly 4 minutes later. At the end of 2, it was 4-3 San Jose.
The only 3rd period goal came with 42 seconds left in regulation, and as luck would have it, that turned out to be Hertl's goal that sent hats flying from the stands. The Sharks would hang on the remainder of the period to win by a final score of 5-3.
Although the Flames outshot, outhit, and won more faceoffs than the Sharks while San Jose racked up 6 penalty minutes to Calgary's mere 4, the visitors from Cowtown didn't quite do enough to quell Hertl's efforts.
Next up for San Jose is a late Friday night home tilt against the Minnesota Wild at 10:30 PM. For Calgary, they head far east across the U.S. to Raleigh to face the Carolina Hurricanes, same night at 9 PM.
