Hyman, Oilers Crush Capitals with Natural Hat Trick

Zach Hyman's 5th NHL hat trick provided the majority of the goals in the Edmonton Oilers' 7-2 victory over the Washington Capitals Wednesday night at Rogers Place.

Leon Draisaitl got the Oilers on the board first at 4:36 of the 1st period, his 33rd of the season coming on an Edmonton power play. They'd add a 2nd PPG a couple of minutes later at 6:58, courtesy of Connor McDavid (25), for a 2-0 Oilers advantage. Washington's first tally of the night came from Ivan Miroshnichenko, just his 2nd of the season at the 8:30 mark, and then the Caps would tie it at 2 after Connor McMichael's 13th of the season at 10:55 on a Washington power play. Edmonton got back in front about 30 seconds later, however, and their benefactor was none other than Hyman, his 44th of the season at 11:24 to give Edmonton the 3-2 lead heading to the 2nd period.

Hyman dominated the 2nd period, completing his hat trick, after scoring his 2nd of the night (45) at 14:13 and then with 52 seconds left in the 2nd to send the hats raining from the rafters. The hat goal was also Edmonton's 2nd PPG of the night, and by the end of the middle period, Edmonton had built a commanding 5-2 lead.

Edmonton's final 2 goals also came in the middle part of the 3rd period, much like the 2nd somewhat. First, it was Warren Foegele (15) at 10:43, and then Connor Brown snapped a 54-game goalless streak at the 11-minute mark for his first of the season to send the Edmonton crowd into a frenzy. It was Brown's first goal as an Oiler and his first since March 24, 2022, when he scored in Winnipeg as a member of the Ottawa Senators in a 5-2 Sens win. A perfect final goal in an already crazy game.

Edmonton improved to 40-21-3, 2nd in the Pacific Division, with a 7-2-1 record in their last 10 games. They play next at home against fellow Western power Colorado on the 16th at 10 pm. Washington fell to 30-25-9, 5th in the Metro Division, with a 5-4-1 last 10 record and a visit to Seattle later tonight at 10 pm!
