Jarvis' First Career Hat Trick Propels Canes Past Canadiens

Seth Jarvis scored his first career NHL hat trick as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Montreal Canadiens 6-2 Monday night at PNC Arena in Raleigh.

The Habs' Michael Pezzetta (4) was the first player on the scoreboard, tallying the first goal of the game at the 3:24 mark of the 1st period. Jesperi Kotkaniemi (9) would tie things for Carolina later at 12:14 and then Jarvis' 1st of the night (9) made it 2-1 Carolina heading to the 2nd period.

1 goal was scored in the middle frame and it was Montreal knotting things at 2 apiece courtesy of Rafael Harvey-Pinard (7) on the power play. It would be the Habs' last goal on the night.

The 3rd period was all Carolina, as they logged 4 unanswered goals to put things away, first by Sebastian Aho (24) at 2:05, Jarvis' 2nd of the game (10) at 3:53, Jordan Staal (15) at 5:00, and Jarvis' hat trick goal at 19:40, 20 seconds left in regulation on a shorthanded effort.

Carolina outshot the Canadiens 41-22 and faceoff wins 30-26 while being even on penalty minutes at 6 apiece. The Habs totaled 15 hits to the Hurricanes' 12 checks. Carolina improves to 36-10-8 and remains steadily at the top of the Metropolitan Division. They play the Capitals at home on Feb. 18 at 8 pm. Meanwhile, Montreal falls to 23-28-4 and remains clear at the bottom of the Atlantic Division. Their next contest is a rivalry clash at the Maple Leafs on Feb. 18 with a 7 pm start time.
