Boone Jenner achieved a natural hat trick in the first and 2nd periods as the Columbus Blue Jackets edged the New York Rangers on a Saturday night at Nationwide Arena.
The Rangers' Erik Gustafsson was the first player on the scoreboard, needing just under a minute for a 1-0 New York lead. Jenner would tie things up at about the halfway point of the 1st period, at 9:36, and would get his 2nd at 17:45 on the power play to give Columbus a 2-1 lead heading to the 2nd period. And as fate would have it, Jenner was the first player on the 2nd period scoresheet, completing his 2nd ever NHL hat trick, his first way back during the 2018-19 season, a 7-4 home win against the Boston Bruins. David Jiricek made it 4-1 Columbus at 13:37, and they held that 4-1 advantage heading to period 3.
Will Cuylle made it 4-2 Columbus at 10:53, while Columbus' Justin Danforth added another Columbus goal for a 5-2 advantage. The Rangers got one more back from Chris Kreider at 19:24 on the power play, but the Jackets had this one in the bag already for a 5-3 win.
Columbus stays at home for their next game, a 7 p.m. tilt with the Detroit Red Wings on October 16, while New York heads back to Madison Square Garden for a home meeting with the Arizona Coyotes, same date and time.
