Johnston, Stars Outlast Sharks Thanks to Dallas Hat Trick

Wyatt Johnston notched his 1st career NHL hat trick as the Dallas Stars eked out a 7-6 win over the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night at the SAP Center.

It was actually the Sharks' Anthony Duclair who had the opening goal for San Jose, his 15th of the season on a Sharks PP at 3:22 of the 1st period. Later on, Fabian Zetterlund (16) at the 12:04 mark made it 2-0 Sharks, before Dallas got on the board with Jamie Benn (10) on a Dallas PP. They'd add another PPG as well, this one from Logan Stankoven (4) with 33 seconds left in the 1st to knot things at 2 apiece heading to the 2nd.

San Jose's Ryan Carpenter (4) put the Sharks back in front at 4:39, but Dallas responded a few minutes later at 8:48 with Johnston's first of the night, his 20th of the season. San Jose responded again, retaking the lead with Duclair's (16) 2nd of the game at 15:48 on another San Jose power play. Philip Zadina (10) added an insurance goal at 17:50, giving the Sharks a hard fought 5-3 advantage heading to the 3rd.

Mikael Granlund (9) tallied the final Sharks goal at 3:02, but then came Dallas' 4 unanswered goals to send things to overtime. Before the 3-on-3, however, those tallies for the Stars were notched by Stankoven (5) at 12:58 and Johnston at 13:41 and 15:42 (21, 22). Roope Hintz was the overtime hero for Dallas, completing the 3-goal 3rd-period deficit at 1:49 of the 5 minute period.

Dallas improved to 38-17-9 and has since picked up an additional win, putting them atop the Central Division. They have a 5-3-2 last 10 record and currently hold a 4-game win streak with a visit to LA to face the Kings tonight at 10 as of this article. San Jose dropped to 15-39-7 with a 1-7-2 last 10 record and has also dropped another game since in the midst of a 9-game losing streak. Ouch. They play Ottawa tonight and as of this writing, are tied at 1 in the middle of period 2!! After that, they travel far east to Philadelphia on March 12 at 7 pm.
