Joseph Notches First Career Hat Trick, Senators Edge Red Wings

Mathieu Joseph achieved his first career NHL hat trick after being picked up by the Ottawa Senators off of the Toronto Maple Leafs as the Sens beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 Friday night at Little Caesars Arena.

Even with that scoreline, the game still ended up being kind of boring, as 1 goal was scored by either team in both the first and 2nd periods. Austin Watson got Ottawa on the board at 5:07 with a shorty, his 4th goal of the season, while Detroit later tied things up at 2:18 into the 2nd period courtesy of Lucas Raymond (21).

In the 3rd period, though, Ottawa would log 3 straight goals to jump out to a 4-1 lead, tallies from Josh Norris (27) at 2:27 on the power play, and back-to-back goals by Joseph for his 9th and 10th goals of 2021-22 at the 3:36 and 10:19 marks. Detroit would answer back with 1 more goal by Raymond (22), his second of the night at 13:59. Joseph, though, would complete his hat trick at 16:05 for his 11th goal of the season to finish off the Wings.

Ottawa logged 32 shots to Detroit's 29 shots and had 36 hits to the Wings' 29 checks. Detroit did manage to win more faceoffs than the Sens, holding a 30-23 advantage in that category.

Up next for Ottawa is a home game against the Red Wings on April 3, with puck drop scheduled for 1 PM. It also means Detroit's next game is a trip to Ottawa, at the same time and the same date. That is not an April Fool's joke, by the way.
