Kraken Outlast Kings with 17 Goal Overtime Thriller

Apologies for the month-long drought. This is just a for-fun blog, you know.

The Seattle Kraken defeated the Los Angeles Kings in the most astonishing scoreline possible Tuesday night at crypto.com Arena. The final score was Seattle 9, LA 8.

Yes, you read that right. NINE. TO EIGHT. In overtime, no less. That's 17 combined goals for you math nerds out there.

Pretty sure the last time I wrote on a scoreline of that caliber was when the Pittsburgh Penguins annihilated the Detroit Red Wings 11-2 on March 27. But enough about the absurdity of this game. Time for the longest scoring recap you'll ever see!

The Kings were the first squad on the board as Anze Kopitar lit the lamp just 16 seconds after puck drop. It was his 5th goal of the 2022-23 season. After that, Seattle would tally a pair of goals by Matty Beniers on the power play at 5:21 for his 8th and Jared McCann (9) gave Seattle their first lead of the night at 8:42. Not too long after that, though, LA would knot things at 2 at the 9:16 mark with Viktor Arvidsson's 5th of the season, also on the power play. A few minutes later, Seattle retook the lead from Alex Wennberg's (5) PPG at 12:55. LA would get the last laugh, however, once again tying things up, this time at 3 from Gabriel Vilardi (12) at 18:52, once again, on the power play for the Kings.

In the 2nd period, Seattle was the first team on the board courtesy of Matty Beniers' 2nd of the night at 1:31 for his 9th of this campaign to give the Kraken a 4-3 lead. Once again, however, it wouldn't last, as LA tied things at 4 with Carl Grundstrom (5) at 2:48. Seattle retook the lead, 5-4, with Jared McCann (10) at 4:56. And that didn't hold for long either, as Adrian Kempe (8) made it a 5-tie game at 6:45. Seattle, however, wasn't fazed and scored another pair of goals by Daniel Sprong (5) at 7:27 and Oliver Bjorkstrand (3) at 9:50. Vilardi's 2nd of the night (13) for the Kings at 15:41 pulled LA within 1. Still, Seattle added a cushion goal from Andre Burakovsky (8) at 19:38, making the Kraken have the last laugh this time.

As if this game couldn't get any crazier from this point, only 2 goals were scored by either side in the 3rd period, and both were by LA, courtesy of Sean Durzi (4) at 11:36 and Mikey Anderson (1) at 13:39. The two teams headed for 3-on-3 overtime, where Burakovsky scored his 2nd of the night at 2:08 on the power play, joining the game's 2 other 2-goal performance club members and winning the game for Seattle in the process.

LA outshot the Kraken 35-30 as well as outhitting them 43-32 and winning more faceoffs 39-23. Both squads were dead even on penalty minutes with 8 each.

Seattle heads back to Climate Pledge Arena in the Emerald City to face the Washington Capitals tomorrow evening at 7 pm. LA, meanwhile, faces the Coyotes at crypto.com Arena late tomorrow night at 10:30 pm.
