Nathan MacKinnon became the NHL's latest 4 goals in a game scorer as the Colorado Avalanche edged out the Ottawa Senators 6-4 Wednesday night at Ball Arena.
The Avs' so-called "Mack Attack" was the first man on the scoresheet, at 2:43 of the 1st period on a Colorado power play for his 15th of the season and a 1-0 Colorado lead. Ottawa would add their first of the game at 15:13 from Josh Norris (11) on an Ottawa PP and then take a surprising 2-1 lead after a tally by Ridly Greig (4) at 15:28. Colorado would knot things back up at 2 before the end of the period however, courtesy of MacKinnon's 2nd of the night at 18:28.
At 1:32 of the 2nd period, Ottawa got back in front courtesy of Jacob Bernard-Docker (2) and later on got a 2-goal cushion via a tally from Drake Batherson (11) at 14:47. Once again, though, Colorado got the last laugh, this time by Mikko Rantanen (16) on another Avs power play with 7 seconds left in the 2nd. Heading to the 3rd, with Ottawa still leading 4-3, MacKinnon got his 2nd PPG of the night at 6:16 to complete his hat trick and to tie the game at 4 apiece before Mikko Rantanen (17) added another Avs PPG just under a minute later to put Colorado in front for good. Rantanen had his 2nd of the night on an empty Ottawa net to seal things with 23 seconds left in regulation.
Colorado improves to 20-11-2, 2nd in the Central Division, with their next game a home contest against Arizona tomorrow night at 9 pm. They also have a 5-5-0 record in their last 10 games. Ottawa meanwhile drops to 11-17-0, last in the Atlantic Division, and a 3-7-0 last 10 record, plus earning their 6th straight defeat from last night. They play next back at home against Pittsburgh on the same day, with a 7 pm start time.
