Mason MacTavish played the hero for the Anaheim Ducks once again, scoring the go-ahead goal with 12 seconds left in regulation to give them an improbable 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins Monday night at PPG Paints Arena.
It was McTavish's 5th of the season and 2nd of the night after he had tied things at 3 with his 4th of the season at 3:01 into the 3rd period. Heading back to the beginning, it was the Penguins on the board first, as Erik Karlsson made it 1-0 Pittsburgh just 2:55 into the game on a Penguins power play. Anaheim would knot things up later at 8:28 from Jakob Silfverberg, and that would remain the score heading into period 2. Fran Vatrano would give the Ducks the lead back, 2-1 at 11:51 with a PPG of his own, his 9th of the season. However, the Penguins nabbed their 2nd goal of the game, and it was in fact another PPG by Evgeni Malkin at 19:25 to send it to period 3 tied at 2.
Radim Zohorna gave the Penguins their only lead of the night just 1:25 into period 3, and it would be the last goal for Pittsburgh, as MacTavish took over the rest of the game from there with his two clutch goals. At least his first of the night wasn't shorthanded if Penguins fans wanted to feel any better.
Anaheim improves to 5-4-0 on the season, 3rd in the Pacific Division while picking up their 4th straight win. Their next contest is back home at the Honda Center against Arizona on November 1, with puck drop scheduled for 10 pm. Pittsburgh drops to 3-6-0 and remains dead last in the Atlantic Division, with their next game kicking off a California road trip starting in San Jose on November 4, also scheduled for 10 pm.
