Brad Marchand achieved his 4th career NHL hat trick while Curtis Lazar added a pair of goals and 1 assist as the Boston Bruins thoroughly defeated their archrival Montreal Canadiens 5-1 Wednesday night in Boston.
It did take a while before any team lit the lamp, as the first goal of the game by either side didn't come until 14:43, with Marchand's 17th of the season breaking the ice for the Bruins. Then just 15 seconds later, Marchand scored his 2nd of the game and 18th of the season to make it 2-0 Boston. The B's would make it 3-0 heading into the first intermission with Lazar's 4th of 2021-22.
In the 2nd period, Marchand completed his hat trick with his 19th of the season, shorthanded no less, to make it 4-0 Bruins. And although Montreal would spoil things with Michael Peretta's 2nd of the season at 10:46, that would be the only biscuit in the oven that the Habs managed to shoot in past Bruins netminder Linus Ullmark. On the other hand, Montreal had to make a goalie change after starter Sam Montembeault allowed 3 goals on 34 shots. The Canadiens subbed in backup Jake Allen for the remainder of the game, who would allow a further 2 goals on 7 shots faced.
In the 3rd period, only 1 team lit the lamp, and it was Boston's Lazar with his 2nd of the night and 5th of the season at 10:19 to make it a 5-1 Boston lead. Things would stay that way until the final siren.
