Marchment Has 3 Goals to Cap Stars' 2023 with 8-1 Win

Mason Marchment had a hat trick as the Dallas Stars closed out 2023 with an 8-1 statement win over the Chicago Blackhawks Sunday night at American Airlines Arena.


Craig Smith (4) started a 3-goal 1st period for Dallas at the 11:35 mark, followed by Ryan Suter (1) at 17:16 and then Tyler Seguin (11) at 19:11 to take the 3-0 lead advantage to the 2nd period. At the 3:43 mark of period 2, Sam Steel (3) made it 4-0 Dallas and Marchment's 11th of the season on a Dallas power play at 12:50 added a 5th for the Stars. Dallas continued to unload on Chicago, even after the Hawks' only goal 38 seconds into the 3rd period from Philipp Kurashev (7) on a Chicago PP. Roope Hintz (15) at 4:46 made it 6-1 and then Marchment added his last 2 at 14:29 (12) and 18:58 (13) to complete his 3rd career NHL hat trick.


Dallas outshot Chicago by a ratio of 41-24 and won 30 faceoffs to Chicago's 25. The Hawks countered with 25 hits to Dallas' 5 and combined for 12 total penalty minutes, each team logging 6.


Dallas improves to 22-9-4, 3rd in the Central Division, with their next game a home tilt against Montreal tomorrow at 8 pm. The Stars also have a 7-2-1 record in their last 10 games. Chicago drops to 11-23-2, and remains last in the Central with a 2-7-1 last 10 record. They play next at Central rival Nashville, same time and date.
