Marner Erupts For 4 Goal-Game, Leafs Pile 10 on Red Wings

When was the last time you saw 10 goals by 1 team in 1 game?

Mitch Marner achieved his first 4-goal game Saturday night, joining the exclusive Hat Trick Plus club as the Toronto Maple Leafs turned back the clock to 1917 with a 10-7 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.

William Nylander got things going for the Leafs with his 20th of the season at 3:52. Michael Bunting would make it 2-0 Toronto at 6:18 with his 18th of the season. On the Red Wings side, Lucas Raymond scored the first of his 2 goals on the night, the former coming at 10:33 of period 1 for his 14th of 2021-22 to cut the Leafs lead in half. Toronto would add 1 more goal by the end of the period, though, as David Kampf (8) made it 3-1 at the 11:06 mark.

The 2nd period belonged to Marner, as he completed a natural hat trick (3 consecutive goals by one player), starting things off at just 0:33 into the 2nd frame. This was Marner's 18th of the season, and he would add his 19th and 20th goals at 4:13 and 9:19 to give Toronto an astonishing 6-1 lead by the middle of the 2nd period. Detroit did get 1 goal back, as Sam Gagner (6) made it 6-2 Toronto at the 13:47 mark. The Leafs, however, scored a touchdown goal courtesy of Auston Matthews at 18:38 for his league-leading 37th of the season making it 7-2.

The 3rd period saw Detroit score 4 unanswered goals to all of a sudden make a 5-goal deficit a 1-goal disadvantage, and they only needed the first 5 minutes of the period to do so. Filip Hronek's 5th of the season at just 0:35 started the comeback for the Wings, while Carter Rowney (3) at 2:09, Joe Veleno (5) at 4:42, and Michael Rasmussen (7) at 5:21 put the Wings back within 1 with almost 15 minutes left in regulation time. Toronto wasn't fazed, though, and would tally an additional 3 goals by Ilya Mikheyev (9) at 7:04, Ondrej Kase's shorty at 10:33 (11), and Marner's 4th of the game (21) at 15:41 to give Toronto a 10-goal team performance. Detroit once again added 1 back, and as fate would have it, it was Raymond's 2nd of the night (15) at 7:45. That would be the last Detroit goal, making it 10-7 by the final buzzer.
