Mitch Marner achieved a 2nd period hat trick and added the 2nd Toronto goal in the shootout for a 4-3 Maple Leafs win over the Seattle Kraken Thursday night at Scotiabank Arena.
Marner's first of the night and his 6th of the season came on a Toronto power play at 6:34 for the only goal by either side in the opening 20 minutes. He'd make it 2-0 Leafs for his 7th of the season just 21 seconds into the 2nd period before Seattle got on the board with a PPG from Jared McCann (10) at 3:37. Marner wasn't fazed, however, completing his hat trick and boosting the Leafs' lead to 3-1 at the 16:01 mark for his 8th of the season. Heading to the 3rd period, Seattle eventually knotted things up at 3 after tallies from Eeli Tolvanen (6) at 6:15 and McCann's 2nd of the night (11) at 13:24. After a tense overtime, things headed to the skills competition.
Round 1 saw Toronto's William Nylander miss Seattle goaltender Philipp Grubauer while Seattle's Kailer Yamamoto had his shot stopped by Toronto goalie Joseph Woll, who also made a crazy save in the final 30 seconds of overtime to get the Leafs to the shootout in the first place. In round 2, Auston Matthews put Toronto up 1-0 with a fivehole effort while on the other side, McCann tried to add to his 2 goal night but was stopped by Woll. Marner didn't miss on his attempt, though, giving Toronto a sweep of the shootout and the win.
Toronto improves to 12-6-3 on the season and 3rd in the Atlantic Division with a duel against Eastern powerhouse Boston on December 2 at 7 pm. Seattle, meanwhile, drops to 8-10-6 and 4th in the Pacific Division with their 3rd straight loss coming tonight. They play next across Ontario in Ottawa, same date and time.
