Meier's 5-Goal Game for Sharks Chomps Kings

Timo Meier achieved a franchise-record 5-goal game for the San Jose Sharks to help San Jose thrash archrival Los Angeles 6-2 Monday night at the SAP Center.

Meier started things for the Sharks with his 16th of the season on the power play at 3:02 into the game. Much later on, San Jose made it 2-0 with Rudolf Balcers' 4th of the season at 15:56. San Jose would then tally 2 more goals, both by Meier to complete his hat trick with season goals #17 and #18 at 18:48 and 19:09 of period 1. Los Angeles would get on the board at 19:44 with Anze Kopitar's 12th of 2021-22. San Jose held a 4-1 lead going into the first intermission.

The 2nd period only featured 2 goals, and both were scored by the Sharks' Meier, who logged goals 19 and 20 of his season, the former on the power play, to give San Jose an impressive 6-1 lead heading to the 3rd period. These two efforts cemented Meier in Sharks history as the first player for the franchise to score 5 goals in 1 game. The previous 5-goal game effort for any team was by the New York Rangers' Mika Zibanejad on March 5, 2020 against the Washington Capitals, his 5th being an overtime winner.

In the 3rd period, Los Angeles was the only team to light the lamp, with Mikey Anderson (2) at 10:35 making it a 6-2 San Jose lead. That would be all Los Angeles would muster for the remaining 9.5 minutes of the period.
