Elvis Merslikis made 31 saves while Yegor Chinakhov added a pair of goals as the Columbus Blue Jackets shutout the homestanding Carolina Hurricanes 6-0 Friday night in Raleigh.
Emil Benstrom got things started for the Jackets with his 1st of the season at the 8:43 of period 1. It would be the only goal scored by either team in that period. Similarly, one goal was scored by either team in the 2nd period as well, this time by Chinakhov at the 11:56 mark for his 3rd goal of 2021-22. The Jackets carried a 2-0 lead into the 2nd intermission after having a 1-0 advantage at the end of the opening period.
In the 3rd period, Columbus made it a goal scoring contest, as they logged 4 unanswered goals, including 3 in just over 1 minute. These tallies made it 5-0 Jackets, and they were scored by Patrick Laine at 4:26 for his 5th of the season, Chinakhov at 5:03 for his 2nd of the game and 4th of the season, and Cole Sillinger at 5:33 for his 6th of 2021-22. Columbus would add their 6th and final tally of the night at 14:26, courtesy of Jack Rsolovic, his 6th goal of 2021-22.
Columbus both outshot and outhit the Hurricanes, 35-31 and 16-11, respectively. On the other side of things, Carolina logged 26 faceoff wins to Columbus' 20 and they racked up 16 penalty minutes compared to Columbus' 6.
Next up for the Jackets is a road trip to Sunrise, Florida to face the Panthers on Jan. 15 at 6 PM. For the Hurricanes, they stay at PNC Arena in Raleigh to face the Vancouver Canucks on the same day, though at a 1 PM puck drop.
