Marty Necas had a goal and 2 assists as the Carolina Hurricanes won the 2023 NHL Stadium Series outdoor game 4-1 over the Washington Capitals at NC State football's Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday night in Raleigh.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi (10) scored the Canes' first outdoor goal just 2:11 into the game for the only goal of an otherwise defensive played 1st period.
In the 2nd period, Carolina logged 3 unanswered goals and also still kept Washington off the scoresheet thanks to efforts from Paul Stastny (7) at 5:47, Necas on the power play (22) at 8:48, and Teuvo Teravainen (7) at 11:17. The Hurricanes took that 4-0 lead heading into the 3rd period, where Washington would get its lone goalscorer, perennial NHL villain Tom Wilson (3) at just past halfway. Carolina held off any potential Capitals comeback afterward.
The Canes outshot the Caps 35-25 while Washington registered 25 hits to Carolina's 12. They also edged them on faceoff wins 41-39 and penalty minutes 13-9. Washington falls to 28-24-6 and stays in 6th place in the Metropolitan Division with their 4th straight loss in last night's game. They next play Detroit at home on Feb. 21 at 7 pm. Meanwhile, Carolina improves to 37-10-8 and remain solely at the top of the Metro riding a 3-game win streak. Their next contest sees them face St. Louis at home at the same time and date.
