Oilers Erase 4-1 2nd-Period Deficit to Defeat Rangers in 11-Goal Overtime Victory

Leon Draisaitl scored his 10th goal of the season 3:27 into overtime to cap off a wild comeback by the Edmonton Oilers against the New York Rangers Friday night. Jesse Puljujarvi also added a pair of goals for Edmonton, earning him First Start of the Night honors for the game.

The Ranger's Filip Chytil opened the scoring just 2 minutes in with a shot past Oilers netminder Mikko Koskinen. Later on, with less than 2 minutes to go in the first frame, Zach Hyman continued his hot season streak by slapping one past Rangers goalie Alexandar Georgiev. In the 2nd frame of regulation, the Blueshirts struck again early, with Kevin Rooney scoring his 3rd of the season with an added assist by Chytil. Only about 2 more minutes went by before Chris Kreider scored his 8th of season past Koskinen to make it 3-1 Rangers. Then roughly 2 minutes after that, birthday bro Mika Zibanejad got it past Koskinen on the power play to make it 4-1. At that point, Edmonton was in deep trouble.

But the Oilers began the comeback after Jesse Puljujarvi scored the first of his 2 goals that night with a cannonading blast past Georgiev. Convienently enough, it was also a power play goal. Then exactly 1 minute into the 3rd period, Tyson Barrie added the Oilers 2nd power play goal in a row to cut the Ranger lead to one, 4-3. Puljujuarvi would add his 2nd of the game after this to tie things up once again at 4 apiece.

New York, however, wasn't quite done. Birthday bro Zibaneajad added his 2nd of the game to give the Blueshirts the lead back, 5-4, with about 13 minutes to go. And then, with just under 3 minutes to go in regulation, Connor McDavid deked the absolute crap out of the entire Rangers defense en route to slapping one past Georgiev to tie things up again, at 5 goals apiece. This was McDavid's 8th of the season, like Kreider.

The comeback was complete when Draisaitl ended the game nearly halfway through overtime, giving the Oilers a hard-fought 6-5 victory.

Edmonton beat the rangers on team stats as well, outshooting them 35-29, outhitting them 27-21, and winning more faceoffs 31-22. Both teams had 4 penalty minutes combined for 8 total minutes in the sin bin.

Next up for the Oilers is a flight to Detroit for a Tuesday night tilt against the Detroit Red Wings at 7:30 PM. For the Rangers, they head 186 miles south to face the Calgary Flames at 10 PM tomorrow night, November 6.
