Evander Kane achieved his first career NHL playoffs hat trick while Zach Hyman added 2 goals and an assist as the Edmonton Oilers took a 2-1 series lead with an 8-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings Friday night at Crypto.com Arena.
Leon Drasaitl opened the scoring for Edmonton with his 3rd goal of the playoffs making it 1-0 at the 3:50 mark by slotting one past Kings netminder Jonathan Quick a split second after a delayed penalty call, which didn't matter for him because it was on Los Angeles. At 6:07, Hyman tallied the first of his 2 goals to give Edmonton a 2-0 lead, marking the final goal of the period by either side.
In period 2, Kane scored his first of the night past Quick at 6:27 for a 3-0 Oilers lead. Hyman's 2nd goal of the night later on at 7:42 sent Quick to the bench for the remainder of the game, as he allowed 4 goals on 17 shots before being replaced by Cal Petersen, who would allow an almost identical ratio of 4 more goals on 20 shots. Ouch. Petersen only allowed 1 goal in the 2nd period, from Kane's 2nd of the night for a 5-0 Edmonton advantage but would allow 3 in the 3rd period of play. After Kane's 2nd goal, LA did manage to cut into Edmonton's lead with 2 goals by Anze Kopitar at 10:07 and Phillip Danault's PPG at 17:29. That would be the only 2 tallies the Kings would get past Edmonton netminder Mike Smith.
The 3rd period didn't feature any goals by either side until late, and they were all by Edmonton. The first came from Ryan-Nugent Hopkins at 14:19, and he would score again for his own 2-goal night at 15:40. Evander Kane finished off his hat trick with 20 seconds left in regulation to give the Oilers the 8-2 W.
