Panthers Continue Franchise-Record Best Start with OT Win in Detroit
The Florida Panthers continued their franchise-record best start to a season, improving to 8-0-0 on the season and leaving them as one of 2 still-unbeaten teams in the NHL. Alexsander Barkov provided the OT winner for the Cats 329 into overtime to give Florida a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Florida got on the board first when Eetu Luostarinen scored his 2nd of the season. Alexsander Barkov added his first of two goals on the night soon after before he scored the OT winner later on, in total getting his 6th and 7th goals of the season that night.
2:15 into the 2nd period, Detroit got on the board when Sam Gagner scored his second of the year to make it 2-1 Florida. That would be the only goal by either team in that period. In the third, Detroit's Pius Suter scored his first of the year with just under 3 minutes to go to tie the game at 2 and subsequently send the game to 3-on-3 overtime.
Detroit held the advantage in hits (23-18) and faceoffs won (34-24), while falling just behind in total shots (32-30) and penalty minutes (8-6).
Next up for the Panthers is a ship up to Boston for a Saturday night tilt against the 3-3-0 Boston Bruins at 7 PM. For the Wings, they head north to take on 3-4-1 Toronto, also at 7 PM. Both games will stream on ESPN+.
