Jansen Hankins was the hero for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the bottom of the 12th round of the Pens' marathon 4-3 shootout victory. The contest marked the third longest shootout in NHL history, behind a 2005 match between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers (15 rounds) and the Caps and Florida Panthers in 2014 (20 rounds)

Denis Savard (1) at 6:24 of the first period made it 1-0 Montreal before Jayden Struble (2) at 12:21 doubled the Canadiens lead. Pittsburgh first got on the board at 13:48 from Sidney Crosby's 16th of the season, part of his 3-point night to put him at 13th all-time in NHL career points. Sean Monahan (9) notched a PPG at 15:20 to extend the Montreal lead to 3-1 heading to the 2nd period. Pittsburgh ended up tying things up at 3 from goals by Jake Guentzel (13) on a Penguins power play at 5:36 and Crosby's (17) 2nd of the night at 11:02 on another Pittsburgh PP. No goals were scored in the 3rd or overtime, so things headed to the regular season skills competition. Pittsburgh scored 5 goals in the SO to Montreal's 3, giving them the deciding edge.

With the marathon win, Pittsburgh improves to 13-12-3, 7th of 8 in the Metro Division. They play next at Toronto on December 16 at 7 pm. Montreal drops to 12-13-4, 6th in the Atlantic Division, with their next game a home contest against the Islanders, same date and time.
