K'Andre Miller scored in the 9th round of the shootout to give the New York Rangers a 2-1 win against the Boston Bruins Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.
Only 1 goal was scored in both the 1st and 3rd period, each by the Bruins and Rangers respectively, while no goals by the Blueshirts or the B's occurred in the 2nd period. Period 1 saw Boston light the lamp courtesy of Charlie Coyle (11) at 3:39. For New York, they wouldn't tie things up until Filip Chytil's 5th of the season at 6:45 of the 3rd period.
The overtime period did have a bit of drama with it, unlike the regulation time. Late in OT, when the game looked to be headed to a shootout, New York inexplicably made a goalie change, replacing starter Igor Shesterkin with backup Alexandar Georgiev due to an apparent "injury" to Shesterkin after he was bowled over by the Bruins' Craig Smith. However, this happened long after the incident involving Smith, and Shesterkin was perfectly fine. Understandably livid with the in-game league's decision of his replacement, Shesterkin himself went so far as to slam his goal stick against the glass as he headed down the tunnel. The Rangers fanbase didn't see the reason why Shesterkin was replaced either, even if it was only for the remaining minute or so of overtime. Igor would luckily be back in time for the shootout, much to the delight of the Garden crowd.
