Mark Scheifele achieved his 3rd career hat trick and picked up an assist as the Winnipeg Jets thrashed the New Jersey Devils 8-4 Friday night at the Canada Life Centre. Nikolai Ehlers added a pair of goals to go along with Scheifele's 3-goal, 1-assist game.
Scheifele got the Jets on the board just 2 minutes into the game, scoring his first of the night at the 1:52 mark and his 3rd goal of the season. A couple minutes later, Ehlers would add his first of two goals on the night at the 3:52 mark, his 7th of the season. A few minutes after Ehlers, Kristian Vesalainen (2) made it 3-0 Jets. Yet just 2 minutes after that, New Jersey got on the board with Damon Severson's 2nd of the season on the power play to make it 3-1 Winnipeg. Later on, Jack Hughes would put the Devils within 1 with his 3rd of the season with 24 seconds left in the 1st period.
The 2nd period was another scorefest, and this time, New Jersey got off to a hot start, tying things up at 3 just 37 seconds in with captain Nico Hischier's 3rd of the season. The Devils then grabbed a 4-3 lead about a minute after that, courtesy of Ryan Graves (3). From there, though, it was all Jets, as Winnipeg would add goals by Ehlers (8) at 10:39, Josh Morrissey (4) at 15:26, and Scheifele's 2nd of the night (4) on the power play to grab a 6-4 lead going into the 3rd period.
About 9 and a half minutes in, Scheifele would complete his hat trick and get his 5th goal of the season to make it 7-4 Jets. Adam Lowry's 3rd of the season at 16:33 sealed the deal for Winnipeg, making it 8-4.
The Jets outshot, outhit, and won more faceoffs than Jersey, 40-37, 30-20, and 37-22, respectively. New Jersey racked up 8 penalty minutes, while Winnipeg only logged 4.
Next up for the Jets is a home tilt against the Toronto Maple Leafs tomorrow evening, Dec. 5, at 8 PM. For New Jersey, they head back home to Newark to face the Ottawa Senators Sunday evening, Dec. 6, at 7 PM.
