Jeff Skinner achieved his 1st career 4-goal game, adding his name to the list of 3+ goal games in NHL history as the Buffalo Sabres extended Montreal's nightmare season with a 5-3 victory to send the hammered Habs to a 10th straight L.
Skinner opened the scoring at 3:41 into the game with his 17th of the season making it 1-0 Buffalo. It would be the only goal scored by either squad in the first frame.
In the 2nd period, Montreal tied things at 1 with Mike Hoffman's 8th of the season at just 1:11 in. Later on, Skinner would give Buffalo the lead back with his 18th of the season at 10:15 to make it 2-1 Sabres. In response, Montreal would tally a pair of goals by Jeff Petry (2) at 11:13 and Joel Armia (2) at 16:09 to give the Habs a 3-2 advantage, but this would be all they could manage to get past Sabres netminder Craig Anderson. At 18:24 of period 2, Tage Thompson (15) on the power play tied things at 3 heading to the 3rd period.
In period 3, Skinner once again provided the only goals by either side, with his 19th and 20th of the season at 8:16 and 18:14, respectively, giving Buffalo a 5-3 advantage, which they would carry for the remainder of the game.
