Jordan Staal achieved his 4th career NHL hat trick, his first since April 18, 2012, as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-2 Sunday night at PNC Arena.
Andrei Svechnikov only needed 1:17 to open the scoring book, his 28th of the season making it 1-0 Carolina. At 5:07, Staal tallied his 1st of the night, his 11th of 2021-22 to make it 2-0. Just a minute later though, Anaheim got on the board courtesy of Josh Mahura (2) at 6:12 to cut the Carolina lead in half. Jordan Martinook (4) at 9:30 gave Carolina a 2-goal advantage once more, but Anaheim got within 1 again before the end of the period with Troy Terry's (32) tally at 11:46.
No goals were scored by either side in the 2nd period.
And in the 3rd period, it was all Staal, who tallied his 12th and 13th goals of the season to complete his hatty, giving Carolina a 5-2 lead and eventual victory.
The Ducks managed 25 shots to Carolina's haul of 43. The Canes also outhit and spent more time in the box than the Ducks, holding 20-15 and 12-10 edges in those categories. Anaheim won 1 more faceoff than Carolina, picking up 29 circle duel wins to the Canes' 28.
Next up for Carolina, or the "Bunch of Jerks" as Don Cherry once called them, is a road clash against the New York Rangers on April 12 at 7 PM. Anaheim, meanwhile, heads south to Sunrise to face the Florida Panthers, same night and same time.
