Teravainen's Hat Trick Fuels 6-0 Carolina Shutout

Teuvo Teravainen scored 3 goals in a dominant 6-0 shutout win over the 2-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning Sunday afternoon at PNC Arena.


Jesperi Kotkaniemi also added a goal and 4 assists in the Hurricanes' beatdown.


Andrei Svechnikov scored the first Carolina goal at 6:20 of the opening period, his 22nd of the season, before Teravainen scored his first of the game later and 8th of the season at 17:13 on the power play. The Hurricanes would hold that 2-0 advantage heading to the 2nd period.


Teravainen was the first guy on the scoresheet in the 2nd period, scoring his 2nd of the day and 9th of the season at 11:57. Shayne Gostisbehere made it 4-0 Carolina at the 15:50 mark for the Canes' 2nd PPG of the afternoon and for his 12th goal of the season. The Canes led 4-0 heading to the 3rd period.


Teravainen's 10th of 2022-23 for the hat trick made it 5-0 Carolina at 11:03. Kotkaniemi added the final goal at 16:34 for the Canes' 3rd PPG of the game.


Carolina greatly outshot the Lightning 38-14 and edged them on faceoff wins 33-28. They had 12 hits as well compared to Tampa's 18. The Lightning also racked up more penalty minutes, holding a 22-16 advantage in that statistic.


The Hurricanes improve to 41-12-8 and remain at the top of the Metro Division. Their next contest is a trip to Montreal to face Les Canadiens on March 7 at 7 pm. Tampa Bay falls to 37-21-5 with their 5th straight loss today. They play next back home against the Philadelphia Flyers on the same date and time.
