Tage Thompson scored with 12 seconds left, destroying his stick in the process as the Buffalo Sabres completed a 4-goal comeback against the Chicago Blackhawks with a 6-5 regulation win Monday night at the United Center.
Calvin de Haan opened the scoring for the Hawks with his 2nd of the season at 7:53 of period 1. It would be the first of 3 unanswered goals by Chicago in the period, as Sam Lafferty (5) at 13:44 and Jonathan Toews (10) at 16:55 on the power play gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead heading to the 2nd period.
In the 2nd, Chicago added a 4th straight goal, courtesy of Seth Jones, his 5th of 2021-22, to make it 4-0 Hawks. Jones only needed 1:21 for his tally. The Sabres, however, would respond with 3 unanswered goals of their own, the first by Victor Olofsson (13) on the power play at the 4:50 mark, and Olofsson again (14) at 10:24. Kyle Okposo's 17th of the season at 14:32 put the Sabres within 1 by the end of the 2nd period.
Buffalo would tie things at 4 with Vinnie Hinostroza (11) at 2:39. Later on, the Hawks would respond with Alex DeBrincat's 38th of the season to take a 5-4 lead a little bit past the halfway point of the period. The Sabres would add a pair of goals, though, courtesy of Alex Tuch (9) at 17:46 and Thompson's GWG at 19:48, his 28th of the season on the power play to give Buffalo an insane 6-5 come-from-behind victory.
