Tippett's 1st Hat Trick Gets Flyers Past Sabres

Owen Tippett achieved his first career NHL hat trick as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Tippett notched the first goal of the game at 15:10 on the power play for his 19th of the season to break the ice late in the first period.


Period 2 saw 3 straight Flyers goals scored by Joel Farabee (10) at 3:53, Tippett's 2nd of the night (20) at 13:14, and James van Riemsdyk (10) at 18:21. The Flyers would hold that 4-0 lead heading to the 3rd period.


Buffalo was first on the scoresheet in period 3, as Victor Olofsson (25) at 2:27 on the power play got the Sabres' first red light of the night. Tippett would add his hat goal at 5:33 for his 21st of the season before Buffalo responded with Olofsson's 2nd of the game also on the powerplay like his last for his 26th of the year and the final goal of the evening.


Buffalo did manage to outshoot the Flyers 36-22 and had significantly fewer penalty minutes than them, 6-22. Philadelphia held the edge on faceoff wins and hits, with 22-21 and 27-23 advantages, respectively.


The Flyers improve to 25-32-11 and remain solely in the 7th position in the Metro Division after snapping a 4-game skid tonight. Their next contest is a home clash with the Metro-leading Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow night at 8 pm. Buffalo meanwhile, falls to 33-29-6 and 5th in the Atlantic Division with their 2nd consecutive loss tonight. Their next game is another home clash against the division-leading Boston Bruins on March 19, with puck drop scheduled for 1 pm.
