MacKenzie Weegar achieved his first career NHL hat trick as the Calgary Flames beat the New York Islanders 5-2 Saturday afternoon at UBS Arena.
The Flames' d-man was the first man on the scoresheet at 3:47 of the 1st period for the only goal of the opening 20 minutes. Calgary would add 2 more in the 2nd, at 8:38 via Jonathan Huberdeau (8) on a Flames power play, then they made it 3-0 after Weegar's 2nd of the game and 14th of the season at 15:14. The Flames held this advantage heading to the 3rd, where the Islanders' Brock Nelson (22) made it 3-1 at the 4 minute mark. Blake Coleman (21) made it 4-1 Flames at 15:59 on an early Islanders empty net, leading to them making it 4-2 at 17:28 from Jean Gabriel-Pageau's 7th tally of the season. Weegar, though, sealed it with his hat goal at 19:38 for Calgary's 2nd empty netter of the game and the final goal of the contest.
Calgary improves to 25-22-5, 5th in the Pacific Division with a 6-4-0 record in their last 10 games. They also pick up their 4th straight win with today's result, their next contest, an intrastate visit to Manhattan to face the Rangers on February 12 at 7 pm. The Islanders drop to 22-18-12, 4th in the Metro Division with a 3-5-2 last 10 record. Their next contest is a home duel with Seattle on February 13 at 7:30 pm.
