Both Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson-Ek had 3 goals and 3 assists en route to the Minnesota Wild's astonishing 10-7 win over the Vancouver Canucks Monday afternoon at the Xcel Energy Center.
Despite the Canucks getting the first two goals, courtesy of Ian Cole (2) at 2:51, followed by J.T. Miller (25) at 13:21, Minnesota pulled one back before the end of the 1st, and it was the 1st of the night from old Double E, his 26th of the season.
Oh, and J.T. Miller had a hat trick too, but since he was in a losing effort, he doesn't get priority here.
Vancouver extended their now 2-1 lead to start the 2nd, after tallies from Elias Pettersson (29) at 5:37 and Miller's 2nd of the game (26) at 9:24 on a Vancouver PP gave them a 4-1 advantage. Minnesota pulled another one back, cutting the lead in two to 4-2, courtesy of Matt Boldy (20) right at the 11-minute mark. Vancouver, though, added 1 more goal, which came from Miller (27) at 14:30. But Minnesota quickly responded with Mats Zuccarello (10) at 19:27 on a Wild power play to make it 5-3 headed to the 3rd.
To say that the Wild exploded in the 3rd period would be an understatement. They rattled off 3 straight PPGs in less than two minutes to take a sudden 6-5 lead. And they weren't done. They added two more full-strength goals to make it 8-5. Five unanswered goals to start a period. That is unheard of in this era of hockey. In exact order, it went Eriksson Ek (27) at 0:29 for his hat trick, Kaprizov (21) at 1:23, Eriksson Ek (28) at 1:44, Marco Rossi (15) at 4:48, and finally, Kaprizov (22) at 5:12. Insane. And the goal-scoring still wasn't done! Vancouver pulled back within one after efforts from Nikita Zadorov (3) at 8:26 and Brock Boeser (31) at 17:52, but Minnesota didn't buy it, because they added two more goals of their own by Jonas Brodin (4) at 18:53 and Kaprizov with literally 2 seconds left! He's called Kirill the Thrill for a reason, folks.
Minnesota rockets to 26-23-6, 6th in the Central and possesses a 7-2-1 record in their last 10 games, with a trip to Winnipeg up next tomorrow evening at 8 pm. Vancouver drops to 37-14-6, still atop the Pacific Division with a 5-3-2 last 10 record and a visit to Colorado for their next contest tomorrow at 9 pm.
